Scientific American: 15 Answers to Creationist Nonsense Embarrassingly, in the 21st century, in the most scientifically advanced nation the world has ever known, creationists can still persuade politicians, judges and ordinary citizens that evolution is a flawed, poorly supported fantasy. They lobby for creationist ideas such as "intelligent design" to be taught as alternatives to evolution in science classrooms. As this article goes to press, the Ohio Board of Education is debating whether to mandate such a change. Some antievolutionists, such as Philip E. Johnson, a law professor at the University of California at Berkeley and author of Darwin on Trial, admit that they intend for intelligent-design theory to serve as a "wedge" for reopening science classrooms to discussions of God.

CanadianDriver: Feature - VW 1-Litre-Car

after three years of development in secret, the 1-Litre-Car was unveiled in April in Hamburg, Germany at Volkswagen’s annual stockholders meeting. To prove that it is a viable, road-going automobile and not just a pie-in-the-sky concept, VW Chairman Ferdinand Piech himself drove the 1-Litre-Car from Wolfsburg to Hamburg to join the shareholders meeting - averaging just 0.89 litres per 100 km (317 mpg) along the way.
To design a car with such incredibly low fuel consumption, Volkswagen engineers had to literally go back to the drawing board – they threw out most off-the-shelf body and powertrain solutions, and started with a blank slate.

Business 2.0 - Magazine Article - The Little (Jet) Engine That Could By combining the Williams engine with new automated airframe-manufacturing techniques, an all-digital avionics system, and creative partnerships with suppliers, Vern thinks he can get the cost of his six-seater jet under $850,000. That is less expensive than many turboprops and far cheaper than the best-selling business jet on the market today, the $3.6 million eight-seater Cessna Citation.

Jane's at Paris Airshow 2001- Sonic Cruiser details leak out Among these is the power-plant. Here, both Boeing and engine manufacturers face a series of technical challenges. The engine will have to be based on current technology – most probably the General-Electric’s GE90, the Rolls-Royce Trent 800 and the Pratt &Whitney PW4098 – but designed to blend into the wing to obviate some of the high levels of drag needed for high-bypass engines. The semi-recessed design will borrow much from Boeing’s military programmes but will not automatically guarantee the noise, range and payload performance that Boeing is seeking. Noise, in particular, will be a major issue. Although the aircraft will be certified from day one to the new Chapter Four noise standards – a mere 10dB less than the current Chapter Three limits – it looks increasingly likely that many European airports will have introduced their own much more stringent noise limits by 2006. Which means that merely meeting Chapter Four requirements may not be enough – and that also implies new noise-reduction technology for wing, airframe and landing gear.

Mitsubishi Heavy develops reusable 'shape-memory' screw

Jun. 26 TOKYO, Japan - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said June 26 it has developed a ''shape-memory'' reusable polymer screw that becomes smooth when heated, allowing it to be easily removed from household electric appliances for recycling. The top photo shows a screw made of the polymer in its standard shape, and the bottom photo shows the screw after it has been heated to 120 C, causing the thread to be absorbed into the screw for easy removal. Once the screw has cooled down, it reassumes its original shape.

Via announces Hypertransport K8 support CHIPSET FIRM Via said it is now formally a member of the AMD Hypertransport consortium and will introduce its K8 Via chipsets – demoed at Computex – towards the end of the year.
Hypertransport is a high speed specification and Via said it would let semiconductors inside machines talk to each otehr at speeds nearly 50 times as fast as existing bus technologies.
What's interesting is that the company has now confirmed earlier reports at Computex that suggest third party chipset support will not materialise very quickly for the Hammer family.
Via, SIS and Nvidia are all officially saying that will come at the end of the year but we think it's going to be a tad later than that.

MS to eradicate GPL, hence Linux

Well, of course no one knows yet; the Levy article is long on generalized promises but very short on details. We know that some hardware element will be involved -- some hardened slice of silicon on the mobo which will identify the computer and the user, and recognize other computers and their users. It, or a companion chip, will interface with some manner of PKI, current or future, so that only 'authorized' applications may run with privileges. MS wants us to think that the 'authorizer' will be the user, but we know better: there will undoubtedly be a DRM element in it, and its authorizations will override yours. There will also be a networking component, involving an elaborate PKI and vast data warehouses run by MS and its trusted partners.

So let's say Intel and AMD begin shipping Palladium-compliant boards as MS begins shipping the software to OEMs and shops. And let's say that the Redmond spin campaign, persuading users that this is actually for their benefit, takes hold, and consumer demand for the scheme begins to grow and it eventually becomes a de facto standard, like SSL today, for example.

Got root?
All right then, how do we get Linux and open-source servers and apps to work with networks using this master scheme? What changes will be necessary?

The first thing that comes to mind is the difficulty of getting my Apache Web server to work seamlessly with Harry Homeowner's Windoze box when he comes to my site for some eminently trustworthy business. Everything I download to him (and this may even include Web pages -- the scheme is that far-reaching) will have some manner of digital cert which MS and its family of cronies will have established beforehand. I don't see a problem here. The certs will be embedded in the content and I'm merely providing space for it to reside. Even pages and images can be digitally signed and Harry's box can simply accept them or not according to rules he's worked out for himself.

But what if Harry needs to transact business and/or send me something? Then I think it gets tricky for two reasons. First, I have to be able to assure him that I can't read what he sends (and neither can the script kiddies who root my site monthly), and second, I'll probably have to pass part of it along 'safely' (as defined by MS) to some other network under Redmond suzerainty where the bulk of Harry's whole life's data is stored and continually updated. And of course I'll need access to that data so I can be sure Harry is Harry and his Mark of the Beast (or whatever MS will call his Uniform Identifier) is valid.

Yagi antenna - a whatis definition

YAGI-UDA Often one needs to improve reception of a particular radio or television station. One effective way to do this is to build a Yagi-Uda, or Yagi, antenna. This is a traveling-wave structure which, as the number of elements increases, has improved directivity, gain, and front-to-back ratio (and additional sidelobes). The basic antenna is composed of one reflector (in the rear), one driven element, and one or more directors (in the direction of transmission/reception). The "zero-order" version of the Yagi has all elements one-half wavelength long and spaced one-quarter wavelength apart. The two designs presented here - a 3-element and a 6-element antenna - have been optimized for improved all-around performance, so their lengths and spacings are non-uniform.

ScienceDaily Magazine -- Adaptive Optics Technology Provides Powerful Tools For Eye Doctors Some of the technology derived from adaptive optics (AO) research is already being used by ophthalmologists to measure aberrations in the eye with unprecedented accuracy, and it may not be long before AO-based devices replace the conventional phoropter used to calculate prescriptions for eyeglasses and contact lenses. In addition, researchers are using adaptive optics technology to obtain extraordinary views of microscopic structures in the eyes of human subjects.

WELCOME TO ALAN DEAN FOSTER.COM Hello- my name is Alan Dean Foster. I've been trying to see as much of this planet as possible, and using my imagination to examine worlds beyond it. Worlds both possible (science-fiction) and impossible (fantasy). Some of you have been kind enough to travel along with me in the books and stories I've set down about those travels. Some have even expressed an interest in knowing a little more about them, and about me. Hence this little website, that I hope you will enjoy

Why software is so bad ... In the last 15 years alone, software defects have wrecked a European satellite launch, delayed the opening of the hugely expensive Denver airport for a year, destroyed a NASA Mars mission, killed four marines in a helicopter crash, induced a U.S. Navy ship to destroy a civilian airliner, and shut down ambulance systems in London, leading to as many as 30 deaths.

United Press International: Pakistan: More Americans arrested WASHINGTON, June 11 (UPI) -- As many as a half-dozen men "of U.S. origin" have been captured in the tribal areas of Pakistan near Afghanistan and handed over to U.S. authorities in an ongoing operation to root out al Qaida terrorists and Taliban extremists, Pakistani sources told United Press International Tuesday.
The men, whose identities were not revealed, were taken prisoner by the Pakistani army following tip-offs by tribal chiefs, sources said.
"Yes, we confirm it," Zamir Akram, deputy chief of mission at the Pakistan Embassy in Washington, said when asked about the arrests. "It is an ongoing operation.
"We have been arresting people and handing them over to the Americans," he said.
It was not known if the five or six men were already in the United States. The definition of "American origin" was also unclear.

Internet sites reveal Al Qaida strategy shift Al Qaida appears to have shifted its strategy away from the United States and against Israel, a report said. The shift in Al Qaida policy was first detected in April. Al Qaida members have made intensive use of the Internet and have launched electronic journals in response to criticism by Egypt that Saudi fugitive Osama Bin Laden has ignored the Palestinians.

SPECIAL TO WORLD TRIBUNE.COM
Wednesday, June 12, 2002
Israeli forces seized 10 bombs being prepared for attacks in Israeli cities as security agencies braced for a new wave of Palestinian suicide attacks.
The bombs were found in the West Bank city of Ramallah, in the headquarters of the Force 17 praetorian guard headed by Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat.
Police have established roadblocks along major arteries from the West Bank to Israeli communities after a Palestinian blew himself up in the elite Israeli community of Herzliya Tuesday in the first such attack on the Tel Aviv suburb. An Israeli teenager was killed and 18 others were injured in the suicide bombing at a fast-food restaurant in a crowded shopping area of the city, Middle East Newsline reported.

Was Einstein Wrong? Space Station Research May Find Out

recent theories attempting to combine gravity and particle physics suggest that relativity might not always apply; changes in space and time may occur that could not be measured easily on Earth.

X-Rays Probe Gravitational Field Of A Neutron Star

Neutron stars are formed when a massive star runs out of fuel and its core collapses. A supernova explosion occurs and the collapsed core is compressed to a hot object about 12 miles in diameter, with a thin atmosphere of hydrogen and possibly heavier ions in a gravitational field 100 billion times as strong as Earth's.
These objects, which have a density of more than 1 billion tons per teaspoonful, are called neutron stars because they have been thought to be composed mostly of neutrons. Although neutron stars have been studied extensively for more than three decades, their exact nature is still unknown.
"We are not even sure that neutron stars are composed of neutrons," said Divas Sanwal, also of Penn State, and lead author on a paper describing the team's results. "They could be largely composed of subatomic particles called pions or kaons, or even free quarks."
One key to narrow the range of possibilities is to measure the strength of gravity on the surface of a neutron star by observing its effect on X-rays from very near the surface of the star. According to Einstein's theory of General Relativity, attraction of photons by a star's gravitational field results in a lower energy of the photon (longer wavelength of radiation) when detected by a distant observer. The measurement of this gravitational redshift relates the mass to the radius of the star, and it will test the theories for the various possible forms of dense matter.

Sometimes the strangest and most obscure lawsuits can set precedents that have profound effects on the rest of the country. Such a situation occurred recently in a California District Court case between BlackSnow Interactive and Mythic Entertainment. The Judge in that case found key elements of Mythic’s end user license agreement (EULA) enforceable. The EULA is that list of legal jargon you have to agree to before you install various software products on your computer. Computer users rarely read and understand the entire EULA before they click “accept” to continue the installation. This precedent implies that you can be held bound to that agreement as if you had read and understood it when you clicked on that button. Millions of Americans are potentially affected.

Why is this precedent so important to the average American? What is written in some EULA’s may surprise the unwary. Microsoft Windows products, for instance, contain a provision that the purchaser of these products does not actually own the software. They are merely renting the software and are restricted in how they may copy it. Most online games contain Code of Conduct provisions, which essentially say that you must behave nicely to other players (if you kill them, do it nicely…) or risk having your account restricted or even deleted. It is very common for players to ignore the Code, saying either “I never agreed to that” or “That isn’t enforceable”. Well, yes you did, and now it is.

Tilapia
A new high-yielding species of this popular tropical inland water fish will soon make its appearance in Asia's kitchens. Bred by ICLARM and collaborators in the Philippines and Norway, this strain is faster growing, more robust, and more efficient as a feed/food converter than traditional strains.
To test this new fish variety in different countries that already farm tilapia, and in diverse farming systems, the Asian Development Bank provided a technical assistance grant of US$600,000 to ICLARM for implementing a project on "Dissemination and Evaluation of Genetically Improved Tilapia Species in Asia". Five countries are participating in the project: Bangladesh, China, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The project became operative in June 1994 and will be implemented over a period of 30 months

The Dillard Disaster It had been quite an exciting week for Dillard. In addition to precipitating an international incident between Tajikstan and Yemen and building a non-working perpetual motion machine, he had played bingo. But now it was over, and Dillard could think of nothing to do. So he did what all people do when they can't think of anything to do. He bought a bread maker. But not just any bread maker. This bread maker was guaranteed to turn a mixture of grains, yeast and water into a light, fluffy easily consumable food substance.

I did up a nice plate of gingerbread cookies for him, you know, the ones with the little raisin eyes and the big bellies. He ate two and then put the rest in his pocket for later. He was stoned, like always, but I saw him on the street later on breaking the cookies up, tasting the edges with his tongue, like you do, you know, when you’re copping some guy’s spices and so on. Sure enough next time I saw him was in America and he had the recipe down, except he was putting little oatmeal crisp hats on the men. I mean, it was just so far out that I wasn’t even mad at him.

These same military and business groups demonstrated their disdain for democracy by removing President Chavez at gunpoint, and then proceeding within hours to obliterate the entire elected Venezuelan national assembly. With a hint of irony, William Blum later wrote that the Bush administration would probably consider this "grassroots democracy."
