Carter Aviation Technologies - Home Page
Carter Aviation Technologies - Home Page: "Carter Aviation Technologies is a research and development company, pioneering new aviation concepts. Our primary focus is the slowed-rotor compound aircraft, a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft that uses the rotor for takeoff and landing, and a small, efficient wing for high speed flight, up to 500 mph, all with much less complexity than a tilt-rotor or other vectored thrust vehicle. We have been flying the CarterCopter Technology Demonstrator (CCTD) since 1998, developing and demonstrating the slowed rotor concept, as well as our other technologies."

GearBits: Scientific Atlanta DVR Not So Hot
GearBits: Scientific Atlanta DVR Not So Hot: "A friend of mine just got the relatively new Explorer 8000 from Scientific Atlanta. The 8000 is a DVR (digital video recorder), much like TiVo or ReplayTV. It has some neat features, including an 80 GB hard drive, dual tuners, and a cheap, cheap price -- it's less than $10 per month from your local cable company (if it's like Time Warner is in our area). There's one big difference between the 8000 and your run-of-the-mill TiVo, however -- it appears to suck big time.
In the roughly 72 hours he's had the 8000, it has reset itself on him about half a dozen times, refused to quit recording, recorded the wrong show, and recorded several copies of the same show (even though it was set to ignore repeats). What's more is that he got no instruction manual or anything when he picked up the 8000. If it were so intuitive that you didn't need a manual, that would be one thing, but this unit's interface is far, far from intuitive."

BBC NEWS | UK | Indian call centre 'fraud' probe
BBC NEWS | UK | Indian call centre 'fraud' probe: "Police are investigating reports that the bank account details of 1,000 UK customers, held by Indian call centres, were sold to an undercover reporter.
The Sun claims one of its journalists bought personal details including passwords, addresses and passport data from a Delhi IT worker for ?4.25 each.
But, in a BBC interview, the worker named by the paper denied the claims.
India's top software body said India was a 'trustworthy' location and would treat the claims 'extremely seriously'."

CNN.com - High court?OKs personal property seizures - Jun 23, 2005:
"WASHINGTON (AP) -- -- The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that local governments may seize people's homes and businesses -- even against their will -- for private economic development.
It was a decision fraught with huge implications for a country with many areas, particularly the rapidly growing urban and suburban areas, facing countervailing pressures of development and property ownership rights.
The 5-4 ruling represented a defeat for some Connecticut residents whose homes are slated for destruction to make room for an office complex. They argued that cities have no right to take their land except for projects with a clear public use, such as roads or schools, or to revitalize blighted areas."

Chemical Industry Targets Historians - Center for Media and Democracy: "In an unprecedented move, the U.S. chemical industry is attempting to discredit two historians who have detailed the industry's efforts to hide links between their products and cancer. 'Attorneys for Dow, Monsanto, Goodrich, Goodyear, Union Carbide and others have subpoenaed and deposed five academics who recommended that the University of California Press publish the book Deceit and Denial - The Deadly Politics of Industrial Pollution, by Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner. Blinding Science with Advertising - Center for Media and Democracy
Blinding Science with Advertising - Center for Media and Democracy: "Popular Science writer William Weed 'spent a day ... recording every scientific claim he encountered in stores, in ads, in newspapers and on TV, radio and the internet. Then he enlisted experts to help him evaluate their veracity.' He concluded, 'A good number were patently false. ... Advertisers probably feed more science to Americans than anyone else.' But learning science from ads, according to Weed, is 'like learning the fundamentals of automobile engineering from a used-car salesman. ... The marketing imperative is, of course, antithetical to the scientific method.'

Mad Cow USA - The Cover-Up Begins to Unravel
Mad Cow USA - The Cover-Up Begins to Unravel: "The US government’s elaborate cover-up of mad cow dangers in the United States has begun to unravel. Twenty-four hours after our successful protest (with Organic Consumers Association) of the US Department of Agriculture’s mad cow dog-and-pony show in St. Paul, USDA Secretary Johanns was forced to admit that a cow tested last year and declared safe in fact DID have mad cow disease, or at least has tested positive on the definitive Western Blot test recently administered by USDA and considered the 'gold standard' for BSE testing."

Oil Lobbyist Becomes White House Climate Science Editor - Center for Media and Democracy
Oil Lobbyist Becomes White House Climate Science Editor - Center for Media and Democracy
Source: New York Times, June 8, 2005
In a lengthy memo Rick S. Piltz, a former senior associate in the Climate Change Science Program, revealed that U.S. government climate research reports had been edited by a White House official, Philip A. Cooney, to emphasize doubts about climate change. According to Piltz's memo Cooney, a former "climate team leader" and lobbyist with the American Petroleum Institute, changed one 2002 document to "create an enhanced sense of scientific uncertainty about climate change and its implications." In March this year Piltz resigned and subsequently contacted the Government Accountability Project, a whistleblower protection organization. A white House spokeswoman, Michele St. Martin, told the New York Times that Cooney would not be available to speak to reporters. "He's not a cleared spokesman," she said. Myron Ebell from the Competitive Enterprise Institute, a corporate-funded think tank, defended the editing as necessary for "consistency."

On April 14, McDonalds issued a self-congratulatory Report on Corporate Social Responsibility, boasting that it is "working with experts" such as The Natural Step to address concerns about "globalization, nutrition, and the environment." But according to author and leading Natural Step advocate Paul Hawken, the report is "a low water mark for the concept of sustainability and the promise of corporate social responsibility. It is a melange of homilies, generalities, and soft assurances that do not provide hard metrics of the company, its activities, or its impacts on society and the environment. ... The McDonald's Social Responsibility Report is like Ronald McDonald - a fantasy. It presupposes that we can continue to have a global chain of restaurants that serves fried, sugary junk food that is produced by an agricultural system of monocultures, monopolies, standardization and destruction, and at the same time find a path to sustainability. ... Nothing could be further from the idea of sustainability than the McDonald's Corporation." Hawken has compiled a list of issues that McDonald's did not deal with in its report

White House sexed-down climate change reports | The Register
White House sexed-down climate change reports | The Register: "Official White House policy documents on climate change were altered by a former oil-industry lobbyist to play down the link between greenhouse gases and global warming, it emerged yesterday.
Philip Cooney, the chief of staff for the White House council on environmental quality, altered several draft reports in 2002 and 2003, after they had been approved by government scientists, despite having no scientific background himself. Much of his editing made it into final versions of reports.
Many of the changes were very simple. For instance, in one case he added the words 'significant and fundamental' before the word 'uncertainties. In another, he added the word 'extremely' to the sentence: 'The attribution of the causes of biological and ecological changes to climate change or variability is extremely difficult.'
Others were more blatant. According to the New York Times, Cooney deleted an entire paragraph dealing with the impact of global warming on glaciers and the polar ice cap from a 2002 report that discussed the effect global warming might have on flooding and water availability. Cooney noted in the margins that the paragraph was 'straying from research strategy into speculative findings/musings.'
In all cases, the amendments cast doubt on scientific results that are increasingly accepted as robust by the scientific community, and by the general populace."

AgentCell
In recent years, single-cell biology has focused on the relationship between the stochastic nature of molecular interactions and variability of cellular behavior. To describe this relationship, it is necessary to develop new computational approaches at the single cell level.
We have developed AgentCell, a model using agent-based technology to study the relationship between stochastic intracellular processes and behavior of individual cells. As a test-bed for our approach we use bacterial chemotaxis, one of the best-characterized biological systems. In this model, each bacterium is an agent equipped with its own chemotaxis network, motors and flagella. Swimming cells are free to move in a 3D environment. Digital chemotaxis assays reproduce experimental data obtained from both single cells and bacterial populations.
