05.24.2005 - Dainty pink Mt. Diablo buckwheat rediscovered

05.24.2005 - Dainty pink Mt. Diablo buckwheat rediscovered: "The Mount Diablo buckwheat, Eriogonum truncatum, 'has been a Holy Grail in the East Bay for several decades,' according to UC Berkeley botanist Barbara Ertter, who confirmed the identification in the field on Friday. Last reported in 1936, the flower was presumed extinct, she said, because its habitat has been overrun by introduced grasses. It is one of only three plants, all of them rare, that are endemic to Mount Diablo."

Common Ground Common Sense > Downey Street Memo Action

Common Ground Common Sense > Downey Street Memo Action: "As many of you are aware, a classified memo was recently disclosed in Great Britain that I believe has serious ramifications for the integrity of the United States Government. Dubbed the 'Downing Street Memo,' but actually comprising the minutes of a meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair and other top British government officials, the memo casts serious doubt on many of the contentions of the Bush Administration in the lead up to the Iraq war. With over 1,600 U.S. servicemen and servicewomen killed in Iraq, the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and over $200 billion in taxpayer funds going to this war effort, we cannot afford to stand by any longer. Evolution on trial again : Page 1

Evolution on trial again : Page 1: "Conceived as a PR stunt to put the town of Dayton, TN on the map, it succeeded in making a laughingstock of the state, which found Scopes guilty in a trial that garnered enormous publicity. 80 years later, scientists have identified DNA as the medium in which heredity is passed on, constructed a map of the entire human genome and can routinely manipulate genetic information in the laboratory. Yet despite the advances we have made in the field, there remains a certain intransigence towards accepting as unquestioned scientific fact the theory of evolution as it pertains to the development of humankind. Although the Roman Catholic Church and other Christian churches defer to the scientific community on this, a highly vocal and well-funded group of fundamentalists in the United States are still bent on the suppression of evolution in schools."

Camera lenses go flat and skinny | The Register

Camera lenses go flat and skinny | The Register: "The researchers added a small amount of a light-sensitive monomer to the liquid crystal in a conventional electro-optic cell. When the liquid crystal is stimulated by a laser, the monomers are stimulated to form a polymer network, with a density proportional to the amount of light falling on the surface. This also affects the orientation of the liquid crystals, and the refractive index of the cell.

By precisely controlling the laser profile, the researchers are able to make the cell act like a lens. Varying the voltage across the lens, the researchers could change the focal length of the lens, because this alters its refractive index. By increasing the applied voltage from 1.5 to 4.5 volts, the team was able to vary the focal length by a factor of five."

Personal Firewall Reviews

Personal Firewall Reviews
Important Tips -- Before installing personal firewall software on a Windows XP computer, be sure that the firewall built into Windows XP is turned off. Never use two software firewalls at the same time. Completely uninstall one before installing another. Use the vendor's uninstall utility or if not available, use the Windows XP add/remove software tool in the control panel. After you install a firewall, be sure to check it with a service like the Security Space Desktop Audit to make sure that it is configured correctly. Testing your firewall is the only sure way to tell that your computer is really being protected.

How To Make A Slipstreamed Win XP SP2 Disc

How To Make A Slipstreamed Win XP SP2 Disc: "I am a user who tends to install windows a lot. It is useful for reviews to have a fresh copy on the machine to remove software as a possible variable. I also tend to experiment with overclocked settings that from time to time cause the system to eat its own O/S. I am sure I am not the only one in a situation like that. Even my father recently asked me about how he can avoid downloading service pack 2 over and over again whenever he's forced to reinstall windows due to picking up a virus from the work LAN. To be honest, its just a pain even with high speed Internet. Even if you have a separate CD containing SP2 to add in later, it's still a slow and painful addition after you've already jumped through the necessary hoops to get XP up and running."

Privacy vs. openness: A data dilemma in U.S.

Privacy vs. openness: A data dilemma in U.S.: "Working with a budget of $50 and a strict requirement to use only legal, public sources of information, groups of three to four students set out to vacuum up not just tidbits on individuals, but whole databases - death records, property tax information, campaign donations, occupational license registries - on citizens of Baltimore. They then cleaned and linked the databases they had collected, making it possible to enter a single name and generate multiple layers of information on individuals.

The Johns Hopkins students demonstrated - as has a growing chorus of privacy advocates around the United States - that there is plenty of information to be had on individuals without ever buying it (or stealing it) from big database companies"

Sebek is a data capture tool designed to capture the attackers activities on a honeypot, without the attacker (hopefully) knowing it. It has two components. The first is a client that runs on the honeypots, its purpose is to capture all of the attackers activities (keystrokes, file uploads, passwords) then covertly send the data to the server. The second component is the server which collects the data from the honeypots. The server normally runs on the Honeywall gateway. Refer to Figure A to see the overall Sebek architecture."

"MONTVALE, New Jersey, May 14 th, 2005 --- The entire senior editorial staff of LinuxWorld Magazine has today announced that they will be leaving the magazine, effective immediately.

The following statement was released by the group. “We regret that Sys-Con Media has been unable to apply a standard of journalistic ethics that we can comfortably operate under. Dual Photography

Dual Photography: "To Appear in the Proceedings of SIGGRAPH 2005

Abstract

We present a novel photographic technique called dual photography, which exploits Helmholtz reciprocity to interchange the lights and cameras in a scene. With a video projector providing structured illumination, reciprocity permits us to generate pictures from the viewpoint of the projector, even though no camera was present at that location. The technique is completely image-based, requiring no knowledge of scene geometry or surface properties, and by its nature automatically includes all transport paths, including shadows, interreflections and caustics. In its simplest form, the technique can be used to take photographs without a camera; we demonstrate this by capturing a photograph using a projector and a photo-resistor. If the photo-resistor is replaced by a camera, we can produce a 4D dataset that allows for relighting with 2D incident illumination. Using an array of cameras we can produce a 6D slice of the 8D reflectance field that allows for relighting with arbitrary light fields. Since an array of cameras can operate in parallel without interference, whereas an array of light sources cannot, dual photography is fundamentally a more efficient way to capture such a 6D dataset than a system based on multiple projectors and one camera. As an example, we show how dual photography can be used to capture and relight scenes.

Sky and Telescope - Mars Polar Lander Found at Last?: "In December 1999 NASA's Mars Polar Lander (MPL) was supposed to touch down near the red planet's south pole. But shortly after it entered the Martian atmosphere, the spacecraft disappeared without a trace. Only now, 5? years later, do scientists think they may have finally located the lander's wreckage and confirmed what went wrong with the mission. "

PhysOrg: Researchers make bendable concrete: "The new concrete looks like regular concrete, but is 500 times more resistant to cracking and 40 percent lighter in weight. Tiny fibers that comprise about 2 percent of the mixture's volume partly account for its performance. Also, the materials in the concrete itself are designed for maximum flexibility. Because of its long life, the Engineered Cement Composites (ECC) are expected to cost less in the long run, as well."

Democrats' Travel Costs Linked to Lobbyist

Democrats' Travel Costs Linked to Lobbyist: "By R. Jeffrey Smith
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 4, 2005; Page A01

Lobbyist Jack Abramoff paid at least a portion of the expenses for two Democratic members of Congress and two staff members to then-House Majority Whip Tom DeLay (R-Tex.) during a pair of trips in the mid-1990s to the Northern Mariana Islands, according to a former Abramoff secretary and travel records published on the Internet yesterday.

The payments represent two new instances in which lawmakers and staff members on overseas trips had their expenses initially covered by a registered lobbyist despite a blanket ban in congressional ethics rules on direct payments by lobbyists for travel-related expenses."

TweakGuides.com

TweakGuides.com: "Uninstalling Firefox

To ensure an absolutely trouble-free experience with the latest version of Firefox it is always recommended that you uninstall any previous version of Firefox completely before installing a new one. To completely remove all traces of Firefox from your system follow these steps:

1. Go to Windows Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs, and if a 'Mozilla Firefox' entry (or similar) exists, select it and click Change/Remove and uninstall it. Reboot if required.

2. Go to your Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Mozilla directory and delete the entire \Firefox subdirectory and all of its contents. Note that this will delete all of your bookmarks and saved settings. If you want to backup any or all of your current Profile, see the Customizing Firefox section first.

3. Go to your \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\ directory and delete it and all of its contents.

4. Using a registry cleaner like RegCleaner 4.3, find and remove all Firefox/Mozilla-related entries (usually there are several Mozilla entries to be found) and remove them. Alternatively you can use the Registry Editor (Start>Run>Regedit) and delete the following keys - that is, right click on their name in the left pane of Registry Editor and select Delete:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\FirefoxHTML]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Applications\firefox.exe]

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\mozilla.org]

That will remove the bulk of the Firefox-related settings which can cause problems with newer installations if they are corrupted for example.

In most cases you should only have to undertake Step 1 of the above list. However if you are having any problems with Firefox, or if you just want to be cautious I suggest you follow all the steps above. Once again if you need to backup any of your bookmarks or settings first, read the Customizing Firefox section below before following the steps above."

The French blood libel

March 5, 2005
The French blood libel Case
Clifford May has an important column in today's Washington Times about the 12 year-old Palestinian boy who allegedly was shot and killed by Israeli gunfire in September 2000. The death of the boy, Mohammed al-Durra, helped set off an intifada, according to former Senator Mitchell's 2001
report. However, May argues that Israeli gunfire did not kill al-Durra, and suggests that a government-owned French television network cameraman may have staged the "death."

That Israeli gunfire could not have killed the boy was the
conclusion of (1) a German television documentary in 2002, (2) liberal journalist James Fallows writing in Atlantic Monthly a year later, (3)the editor-in-chief of L'Express and a French documentary filmmaker who reviewed the unedited video of the shooting, and (4) Nahum Shahaf, the physicist assigned by the Isreali government to review the incident.
Each concluded that it was physically impossible for the Israelis to have killed al-Durra given the position of the troops in relation to the boy. Even France 2, the television station that initially claimed the deadly gunfire was coming from the Isreali position, now states that no one can say for certain who killed al-Durra.

But there is more. The film was shot by a Palestinian cameraman. No one else representing France 2 was present. The information used by the France 2 reporter in the voiceover came solely from the Palestinian cameraman. The reporter now states that he doesn't know the facts, but defends his claim that the Israelis killed al-Durra on the theory that it "corresponded to the reality of the situation not only in Gaza, but in the West Bank." In short, the facts of the case don't matter.
Indeed, they can be fabricated as long as they correspond with the beliefs of those who "report" them.
