Syracuse University geologists raise questions about controversial theory of species survival

Syracuse University geologists raise questions about controversial theory of species survival

First proposed in 1995 by Carl Brett of the University of Cincinnati and Gordon Baird of the State University of New York at Fredonia, coordinated stasis attempts to describe the emergence and disappearance of species across geologic time by suggesting that species living together in the same environment go through long periods of stability—some six million years—and then undergo a rapid, almost complete turnover, during which old species disappear and new ones emerge. Until 1995, most researchers believed that species emerged and disappeared independent of each other throughout time.

Snort.org

Snort.org

Snort is an open source network intrusion detection system, capable of performing real-time traffic analysis and packet logging on IP networks. It can perform protocol analysis, content searching/matching and can be used to detect a variety of attacks and probes, such as buffer overflows, stealth port scans, CGI attacks, SMB probes, OS fingerprinting attempts, and much more.

Snort uses a flexible rules language to describe traffic that it should collect or pass, as well as a detection engine that utilizes a modular plugin architecture. Snort has a real-time alerting capability as well, incorporating alerting mechanisms for syslog, a user specified file, a UNIX socket, or WinPopup messages to Windows clients using Samba's smbclient.

Snort has three primary uses. It can be used as a straight packet sniffer like tcpdump(1), a packet logger (useful for network traffic debugging, etc), or as a full blown network intrusion detection system.

The problem with a strong-arm approach to computing is that the engineers and nerds that make up the core of technical buyers tend to strongly disapprove of what they view as "slimy" marketing. Marketing efforts are typically seen, at best, as a necessary evil, and at worst as the lies of a company that cares only about their profit line. A company's perceived image and the goodwill it's generated in the community can be tremendous commodities.

Robert and his colleague J.K. Huang have discovered how to use what they say is a unique combination of magnetoelastic and piezoelectric materials to efficiently convert tiny vibrations into electricity. An obvious application could be the small sensor "motes" I wrote about in February.

The appeal of the electronic eBook compared to the traditional chewed-up wood version is obvious. For the publisher there’s the immediate and enormous cost-saving in terms of design, materials and delivery. For the reader there are the further benefits provided by electronic text such as searching, bookmarking and copying. What really clinches the case though is the idea of the universal library: with just one device you can access any book.

But what type of device? Plenty of dedicated eBook candidates have appeared over the years, such as the paperback-sized Franklin eBook Rocket, and research still continues on new technologies such as paper-like displays. Generally though it looks like the market has already made its choice. Rather than demanding its own dedicated device, eBook reading is now seen as a natural application for the burgeoning handheld market alongside PIM, mobile telephony and MP3 playback.

Microsoft has enraged the developer community after a Redmond executive last week threatened a software developer to prevent him from demonstrating a Microsoft application running on Linux.
The situation is confusing because Hentzen had done the demonstration before, with no problems. Also other developers had been led to believe from Microsoft that "as long as licenses were in order" running VFP on Linux as developer environment was permissible.

Hentzen has written to Microsoft asking for clarification to this conflicting advice. He told us this afternoon he was yet to receive a reply.
