The ATM's Workshop - Smithy CB1220XL Review: "he three-in-one machine limitations that remain as compromises for the hobbyist are centered around size and the machine's feature list. This is where you must choose between cost and function. Try to envision as many of the possible uses for your machine as possible and use the information to rate the prospective machines you find.
In the lower cost hobbyist portion of the machine tool market, there are four main competitors with three-in-one machines. These are Grizzly Industrial, Harbor Freight Tools, Shoptask, and Smithy. There may be others, but these are the companies most often mentioned in this market.
Soon after gathering all the specifications, I had narrowed my choice to Shoptask and Smithy. An important aspect of my purchase choice was going to be service after the sale, if needed. I was not able to get any more details on the Harbor Freight and Grizzly machines than appears in their respective catalogs. (I like dealing with Grizzly. Their customer service is usually quite helpful, but the lack of detailed specification on their 3-in-1 machine forced me to drop them from consideration."

SetTru Scroll Chuck Backplate
SetTru Scroll Chuck Backplate: "Mounted on the lathe, showing two of the adjuster set screws. I was amazed at how accurately it could be adjusted - closer than a 4-jaw in my experience. I was able to get TIR to under 0.0001', on a piece of 1/2' dia. reamer blank! That may have something to do with the finer threads on the adjuster screws on this backplate, compared to the 4-jaw jaw threads. I took a short video of it, but don't click on this unless you have a high speed connection, the file is huge (1.5MB). In one instance, I was able to adjust it so closely that I'm sure it was 1/10th of 0.0001'. By that I mean, on an indicator that reads out in 0.0001', the needle barely moved, so little it was only about as much as the line thickness."

Making a Lathe Test Bar
Making a Lathe Test Bar: "By Jose Rodriguez
Imagine having just purchased your first or
maybe even your second lathe and after lugging
everything into your garage, or as with the majority of
us, down the kitchen steps into our basement shops,
you sit there, sweating, gazing happily at all that new
pretty tooling. You spend all that time recuperating as
you read and re-read your new lathe's instruction book
and marveling at your brand new tool and accessories. "....

mini-lathe.com home page
"If you have never run a metal lathe before, or it's been many years since you last did in your high school shop class (back when high schools stillhad shop class!), you can find some helpful information on the Introduction, Getting Started, Operations, Tool Grinding and Adjustments pages. If you are considering purchasing one, check out the Versions pages and the Product Review pages. The Features page describes the Harbor Freight 7x10 lathe in considerable detail. Be sure to read the Safety page for important safety tips."

New Lathe and Mill
"One motivation for building the new shop was to have enough room for a slighter larger lathe and mill. While the mini-lathe and mini-mill meet most of my needs, projects come along from time to time which are just too large for these little machines. Since I don't have any friends nearby with larger machines, I decided to get some of my own."

CNN Guerrillas in the Midst: A Viral Marketing Campaign Exposed | Nick Lewis: The Blog
CNN Guerrillas in the Midst: A Viral Marketing Campaign Exposed | Nick Lewis: The Blog: "This is CNN: the only major news network using your blog for an experimental guerrilla marketing campaign. [updated 4/28]
Last week, CNN appears to have attempted an unusual marketing campaign in the blogosphere. The campaign combined blackhat search engine optimization techniques, viral marketing tactics, and guerrilla comment spam. Unlike the majority of comment spam, this spam appears to only target blogs that have discussed CNN in the past 3 months. So far, 13 separate instances of the spam have been found. Most alarmingly, the spammers may have also left malicious keywords in 4 out of 13 of the targeted posts; its suspected the intent was to use google's keyword stuffing detectors to censor them. According to my sources, as of 4/27/05 CNN denies that they had anything to do with this. "

PhysOrg: Discovery Captures, Converts Heat
PhysOrg: Discovery Captures, Converts Heat: "Your car's engine loses 70 percent of its energy as waste heat-but Australian and Oregon scientists may have figured out an efficient way not only to recover that lost energy, but to at long last capture the power-producing potential of geothermal heat.
The trick is to convert it to electricity-and a promising way to accomplish this, the researchers have discovered, involves using extremely thin nanowires to potentially more than double the efficiency of thermoelectric materials."

PhysOrg: Chip-scale refrigerators cool bulk objects
Chip-scale refrigerators capable of reaching temperatures as low as 100 milliKelvin have been used to cool bulk objects for the first time, researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) report. The solid-state refrigerators have applications such as cooling cryogenic sensors in highly sensitive instruments for semiconductor defect analysis and astronomical research.

Soekris Engineering
Welcome to Soekris Engineering's website.
We're now introducing the new net4801, the first board in the next generation of our PC-Based advanced embedded communication computers.
The net4801 is a compact, low-power, low-cost, advanced communication computer, based on a 266 Mhz 586 class Geode single chip processor. It has three 10/100 Mbit Ethernet ports, up to 128 Mbyte SDRAM main memory and uses a CompactFlash module or a 2.5" hard drive for program and data storage. It can be expanded using a MiniPCI type III board and a low-power 3.3V standard PCI board. It also offers a USB 1.1 interface and environmental monitoring. It has been designed as a higher performance upgrade to the net4501 and is software and form factor compatible.
The net4801 has been optimized for use as a Firewall, VPN Router and Internet Gateway Server, but has the flexibility to take on a whole range of different functions as a communication appliance.
The popular net4501 embedded PC communication computer, and the variations for wireless communication, the net4511 and net4521, will continue to be available as cost effective entry level boards.

Kierkegaard writes "The Globe & Mail and Fortune Magazine both wrote a piece on Google, arguably one of the most important companies in the world, and its influence and impact on the Internet. In particular, they mention the effects of Google's recent new services, like Blogger and Maps, as well as their take on how Google threatens the Microsoft Corporation. "If Sergey and Larry stick to their corporate mantra -- Don't be evil -- and are able to stem degeneration into the typically corrupt corporate ethos, who knows, they may just succeed in assuming the fair and honourable dominion over the world's information they so naively set out to achieve eight years ago in their garage.""

Partnership for a Drug-Free America and Corporate Drug Wars.
Partnership for a Drug-Free America and Corporate Drug Wars.: "Halliburton is another US corporation that benefits from war. This corporation's patron saint is its former CEO, Vice President Dick Cheney, who is accused of using insider influence to unfairly garner billions of dollars for Halliburton via non-competitive Iraq rebuilding contracts. The company is accused of fraudulently wasting hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars and committing other major corporate crimes in Iraq, Nigeria and elsewhere.
The United Nations says the Bush administration is withholding information from auditors examining more than $1 billion in contracts awarded to Halliburton and other companies in Iraq without competitive bidding. Sources say Halliburton, Bechtel and other US corporations have likely diverted or misspent millions of dollars of Iraqi oil money that was supposed to have been spent rebuilding the country destroyed by weapons manufactured by US corporations."

Partnership for a Drug-Free America and Corporate Drug Wars.
Partnership for a Drug-Free America and Corporate Drug Wars.: "The movie cites the example of American-based Bechtel Corporation, which attempted to take over the public water system in Cocachamba, Bolivia in 1999, after the World Bank pressured the country to privatize the system. In cahoots with corrupt, fascistic Bolivian officials and the military, the engineering company locked down the water supply - even making it a criminal offense to gather rainwater!
When thousands of thirsty Bolivians staged massive protests against Bechtel, soldiers and police brutalized and killed protesters, including children. The US company eventually shut down its Cocachamba operations, but later sued the people of Bolivia for $25 million; the lawsuit is being heard in a secretive, pro-corporate World Bank court."

DCFRN Script 29.6
DCFRN Script 29.6
First, collect containers for the earthworms. Small, portable containers, such as wooden boxes or plastic tubs, are easiest to work with at first. If you cannot get these, you can build shallow stone bins or dig pits in a shady, cool place. Put stones or other material along the sides and bottom of the pit to keep out rats and snakes. You will also need some kind of mesh to cover the top and keep out birds that may feed on the earthworms. You could use a fine wire or plastic mesh. Or you could use a thick layer of straw or leaves.
Next, prepare the feed for the earthworms. The feed should be a mixture of three kinds of waste. First, some organic kitchen waste such as vegetable and fruit skins, nut and egg shells, used tea leaves, meat trimmings, etc. It should also include farm waste such as hedge and grass clippings, weeds, dry leaves, crop residues, sawdust, and grain husks. And, finally, dung from cattle, horses, sheep, goats, or pigs, or poultry droppings.
