The Xiph.org Foundation agreed with On2 Technologies Inc. to provide a free open-source multimedia package that includes a Server, a Player and a Personal Video Recorder to the desktop users.

The Xiph.org Foundation has recently provided us with Ogg Vorbis, one of the leading patent-free audio compression schemes. While still in development, Ogg Vorbis is used widely by end-users for their multimedia needs. Many talk of Vorbis as the rival of MP3, the latter being highly established over the Internet, mainly for music distribution. Vorbis is totally free and the licence that comes with its source allows companies to integrate it into their applications without any cost at all.
