TRN Online: News But more than a summertime treat, research is finding that watermelons have a high concentration of the chemical lycopene, an antioxidant that improves blood circulation and reduces the aging of skin.
In research provided by the National Watermelon Promotion Board's Web site, watermelon.org, the greatest sources of lycopene in fresh fruits and vegetables are watermelon, tomatoes, red grapefruit and guava.
In some cases, watermelon was shown to have the most lycopene of any red fruit, containing as much as 15-20 milligrams of lycopene per two cup serving, according to the Web site.
